The psychedelics probably worsened some underlying mental issues he already had. If schizophrenia/bipolar disorder, psychosis, etc commonly run in your family and you take psychedelics it can trigger psychosis.

Kid clearly had mental problems which were aggravated by his drug use. Doing drugs is obviously never a good thing, but for people with mental problems (like depression or something worse which this guy clearly had) its just so much worse. People who are depressed and have issues with their mental health will often seek out drugs and alcohol because while they are high or drunk, they feel somewhat better. But longterm, doing drugs and drinking will make their mental problems a lot worse and it will not get better when they stop using if they dont get help. And this guy was clearly already in deep shit when he came home from college (guarding his house from demons at night, telling people he is half-horse or dog and who knows what else).Even if he wasnt using drugs anymore, damage was already done. This is where his family should have reacted and found him some help. Even mental disorders like schizophrenia (which may be the case here) can be brought under control with right drugs and therapy which allows people to live relatively normal lives. I dont know if his family was just embarrased or really didnt realize that he needs some help, but that fight with his dad probably put him in full blown psychotic rage mode and unfortunately innocent people paid for it. Incredible tragedy

Sounds to me like he a one too many bad trips.. have you ever met someone who's been completely fried by drugs. I have, but also most of these psychotic episodes don't develop until your late teens early 20s.. so honestly it could have been a combination of all those things..
People don't believe in possession until they witness it themselves and even then it's too scary for many to accept.
