He should not have lied. In those countries, if you want a fair trial. You have to confess to your crimes. If you don't confess they will slap you with the highest possible sentence. There is a lot of cases of people getting busted with narcotics in UAE. They confess and plead guilty and ar jailed for 1 year at most, in the case of cannabis, hashish, etc…

Don’t go to foreign countries, particularly Muslim countries and expect to carry any type of substance which can be interpreted as a drug. This is an awful case, but this is their laws. We don’t expect people to criticise our laws here in the UK. Also maybe if we had tougher penalties in the UK in decades past, we wouldn’t be in the mess we currently are in with regards to drug abuse.
