My argument summary: 1) marijuana can treat the symptoms of cancer as well as the medical condition itself, 2)marijuana can treat symptoms of many medical conditions without affecting the treatment of the condition, 3)marijuana can treat symptoms of some medical conditions while simultaneously having a negative affect on the treatment of the condition. There is a growing myth in the marijuana culture and amongst marijuana advocates there are no medical conditions that marijuana can have a negative affect on the treatment of. This is untrue, is unclear, and is confusing and hinders the progress of the legalization at the federal level because they are dealing with Republicans. To make things worse, when the Republicans look at the issue of home growing and how to write the laws, they see leaders advocating home growing to impressionable youth using this message without using clarity, which for Republicans is their worst nightmare: corrupting youth. How do I know? I watched the discussions in the legislative assembly when lawmakers were discussing with themselves and presenters, writing and passing the bill a21 cannabis act for New Jersey in November 2020. I even got my email read by Senator Scutari and I believe it was made available to all the Senators who caught wind of it on the morning I sent it:
Senator,
My name is Shawn Walton and I was asked by Dasheeda Dawson of Cannaclusive, a cannabis equity advocacy group, and Mary Pryor, an author and small business consultant, to give testimony to the need for the Cannabis Regulatory, Enforcement Assistance, Marketplace Modernization Fund to also include an Equity Fund. I live in Ottawa, Canada. After legalization here in 2018 many of us were surprised that marijuana did not become popular and more visible. I believe the reason for the small peaking of visible marijuana use and the subsequent return to discretionary use is the social stigma against it. Such stigma is the barrier to normalization and a successful legal market for cannabis. Normalization is going to be a long drawn out process because of the pain prohibition caused and the enforcement of these laws disproportionately towards social groups. Generally speaking, I believe society will be better off when marijuana is more popular because it can efficiently treat symptoms associated with alcohol dependence for the newcomers to marijuana use, and because it will make all consumption of marijuana possible with dignity and without anyone feeling diminished by their peers. More importantly, there is a certain inevitability regarding the end of prohibition and the requirement for the victims of it and their sympathizers to go through the 5 stages of grief. I am asking you to please include funds for cannabis equity in bill A21 because if you do not then you are delaying the inevitable, and adding salt to the wound. Yes, we all will have to wait for federal legalization to finally feel normalization, but can you please do the right thing and get this started on the right foot.
Thank-you for your time,
The impact marijuana has had in the treatment of cancer has championed marijuana as medicine and is the number one force driving the fall of prohibition, but we need to correct a terrible misconception that is widely agreed upon amongst marijuana advocates which is that marijuana can treat medical conditions as well as the symptoms of the conditions like pain and anxiety. In the case of cancer, marijuana can treat the condition as well as the symptoms and it provides patients with this ability to add to or in some cases replace medical treatments, but this is not true of all other medical conditions. In the case of trauma and PTSD, marijuana can only treat symptoms. Not only can marijuana not treat the condition, but marijuana can stop the condition from healing naturally and medically too. So PTSD is great example of how the message of marijuana being medicine needs to also acknowledge 1) where it cannot treat a condition, 2) where it will stop the treatment of a condition. The example of PTSD has extra significance because of how trauma is not just about events that are clear-cut examples of shocking events that involve a lot of danger or fear of loss of life or free will, but is also micro-events and every event in between that can do the same injury to human emotions. For this reason, we may even want to stop advocating that marijuana is safe for everyone and cannot hurt them, when in fact there are a lot of people who are heavy consumers of marijuana whose emotional well being could clearly benefit from taking breaks from marijuana in order to let their brains process emotion that are otherwise being avoided. The sooner we include this discussion in the message about marijuana as medicine, the sooner we will be witnessing federal discussions about legalization in the USA.
I can't wait until wifey makes these !! Thanks Paula !!
In order to get the message right for federal legalization to happen it is important to discuss the confusion people have. Currently the medical marijuana message promotes marijuana as a medicine for anything and doesn't discourage anyone from taking medical treatments additionally. While marijuana can help treat cancer, most marijuana promoters do not discourage cancer patients from taking their cancer treatments as well as marijuana. While there is no confusion in examples like cancer, there is confusion in examples of medical conditions whose treatment can be hurt by marijuana. These examples do exist and marijuana promotion is not honest about it, and it is an elephant in the room when it comes to discussing federal legalization with republicans. An example, which I know from personal experience, is PTSD, marijuana can treat the pain and symptoms of the medical condition, but not the condition itself. Not only can marijuana not treat PTSD, it can get in the way of treatment of PTSD. We as promoters of marijuana as medicine for everyone need to be clear and honest about the examples where marijuana can hurt the treatment of certain medical conditions. Furthermore, as promoters of marijuana, we should also be open and honest about any examples where marijuana can hurt the treatment of non-medical conditions too.
Marijuana is medicine that can help everyone and is medicine for everyone, and this is the miracle about this plant. Marijuana cannot hurt anyone, this is the truth that everyone is learning now. But there are some false expectations that are hurting the legalization from being accepted by the republicans and that are stopping the U.S. federal legalization from moving forward: for example, marijuana can treat the pain of PTSD, but it is not a solution for and it does not heal PTSD. I think this is the case for a lot of medical issues whose symptoms can be treated effectively by marijuana, and this is causing a misconception that marijuana will heal the medical issue. When marijuana is promoted as being medicine for everyone and any kind of pain, we need to also tell everyone that marijuana is not a medical treatment for all underlying medical conditions. Or whatever the correct message is , then the republicans will accept federal legalization.
Federal legalization will change humanity on par with the birth of the internet and smartphones, and it will cause something all marijuana enthusiasts have always wanted: recreational activities and celebratory parties centered around marijuana in the mainstream culture free of any marginalization. The medical message that "marijuana is medicine and cannot hurt anyone" has gotten the legalization movement to where it is, but republicans need this message to be edited to "marijuana is medicine for everyone and cannot hurt you, but is not a solution to somethings like healing trauma, for example."
