New Poll: Trump Trounces Biden And Harris In Hypothetical 2024 Matchup

In what could be an early snapshot for 2024, a new poll shows that hypothetical matchups between President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump would be heartache for Democrats.

According to a new Harvard CAPS-Harris poll, if the election were held today, Trump would handily beat Biden.

Doesn’t Get Any Better

Such a race wouldn’t be particularly close – with Trump trouncing Biden by a margin of 47%-41%.

Vice President Kamala Harris does even worse. In a head-to-head matchup, Trump would win by an even bigger margin of 49%-38%.

Donald Trump has been teasing another run for the White House for some time, and he is still hugely popular with the base of the Republican Party.

But the Harvard CAPS-Harris poll reveals more information about where American voters may come down on GOP candidates if Trump does not make another bid for the White house.

The poll showed that a hypothetical match up between Harris and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the odds-on favorite in the absence of Trump, Harris pulls out the win by the narrowest of margins 40%-38%.

But that’s before DeSantis becomes a national figure in the process of running for the White House. He scores that high as a state governor, over two years away from the election.

Biden Approval In The Tank

The handling of both domestic and foreign issues is slowly chipping away at Joe Biden’s approval numbers. A new NBC News poll showed that nearly 70% of Americans disapprove of Biden’s handling of the war in Ukraine.

Biden’s job approval rating of 40% is the lowest it’s ever been in the NBC poll.

While slightly more Americans approve of Biden’s handling of COVID at 51%-46%, the opposite is true of his handling of foreign policy where 51% disapprove and 42% approve. But it is the so-called “kitchen table” issues, personal income and inflation, where voters are placing the blame squarely on the Biden administration.

Those who think that their personal income is falling came in at a whopping 62%, with 38% blaming Biden administration policies for rising inflation.

Other Possible GOP Names For 2024

While Donald Trump is the favorite for the Republican nomination by GOP voters by 59%, there are other names being mentioned should Trump decide to sit out 2024. According to the Harvard CAPS-Harris poll, former VP Mike Pence came in at 11% and Ron DeSantis at 10%. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) also came in at 10%.

Back in February, the CPAC straw poll saw a diverse list of names thrown in, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and plenty of Senators including Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, and Josh Hawley. All of those mentions brought in voting percentages in single digits.
