Good interview and I disagree with Gates assessment of the incident on January 6th. Those individuals who stormed the capitol weren't armed. I don't condone what they did and find it appalling but they are not a threat to our country. If the Federal government wanted to deal with them swiftly they could have. Many examples in history of that. The 1993 Waco siege is a prime example, with the Feds sending (100) armed agents to enforce a $200 tax fine murdering (82) civilians. I do agree with Gates assessment of Presidents denying culpability for anything/everything that they do or not do which is a common standard for society today. He's also correct that no matter how much resources another country is given by the US, they can only change for the better from within.

The idea that those 7 Afghan children died because the US was not close enough or didn't have good enough intel is just plain ludicrous. The fact is the US killed innocent Afghans for 20 years straight, in bombings and night raids, mostly peasants living in the countryside and their children. That's in large part why we lost the war so spectacularly.

Strange how AFTER people are in public service they become the kinds of voices we need IN public service. They rarely risk their status as a team player. Yet to his credit he was one of few people that worked at high levels of our government that served both political parties well, they are seldom seen. He clearly served his country first and foremost.

Sec Gates described Biden correctly – he has not made the right decision in 40 years , the fiasco in China and Afghanistan are proof of Biden’s incompetency.
But he failed to address the why we were in Afghanistan. All 9-11 terrorist were Saudis supported by the Saudi government. None were Afghans or Iraqis ? He failed to address the lie of weapons of mass destruction used to attack Iraq ? So he has some responsibility for this cluster F in the Middle East.
I think his characterization of Trump is accurate. But again he failed to address why Trump might disdain institutions that tried to remove him from office . The CIA, FBI , NSC , FISA court the Intelligence community all we’re involved in a hoax to remove him . Paid for by Hillary Clinton people – Sussman lied regarding a Trump / Russia bank connection to the FBI , FBI agent lies on a FISA warrant to spy on Trump campaign , the FBI has agents that said they stop Trump from being President, an FBI willing involved in the Russian hoax . An FBI that failed to release damaging information on the Biden’s and their Chinese deals.
He also did nit address why we were involved in a failed regime change in Syria and Libya . A change that gave rise to the rise of ISIS and the migration of Muslims to Europe? What threat had they committed to the USA?
It’s no wonder he felt sick as he watched Biden’s failure in Afghanistan as he knows the cost of a failed 20 year war , failed policies made in Afghanistan in a war we never belong to be there in the first place . No cure for that illness .
