Why mention only European countries that have socialized Healthcare? Hello…your neighbor has it too! SMH Canada can afford it because our tax dollars go to our people…especially our hospitals. Just like police fire dept., schools and teachers…hospitals are non profit. THAT is key. And you won't see any pharma commercials on TV. They keep drugs affordable because our elected government keeps them in line. Not one single person has lost their home because of hospital bills. Not one. As a Canadian, I cannot believe universal healthcare would work in the US, partly because there are so many grifters around who want their piece of the action and would do anything to screw it up so they can then tell the masses "See? It doesn't work". They are bad actors dealing in bad faith.
Does anyone believe Canadian universal healthcare was embraced with open arms by the insurance companies, doctors and drug companies? Hell no! Politicians like Tommy Douglas had to fight tooth and nail to push the idea through. But Canada was also much younger then and we have a much smaller population with a different culture and mindset. (Honest, we're not clones of Americans. There's overlap in certain areas but many things are different here too.)
I'm the "lucky" recipient of heart stent surgery and then open heart surgery. Had I lived in America, I know I would have bought a gun and killed myself knowing I'd be stuck with a huge bill I could never repay.
My cousin, who's a cab driver, told me he drove an American doctor to the airport years ago. The doc made a remark to him, saying Canada has "socialized medicine". My cousin felt obligated to correct him by telling him "No, we have civilized medicine".

Such a grotesque lack of understanding of why the american health system is so expensive…really, Europeans are to blame??? The pharmaceutical industry would really increase their profit margin (and may lower drug prices) in US were it not for 100 mil. CEO salaries, politicians briberies, advertising drugs directly to patients and an effort from insurance companies to lower drug prices. Its a well know fact, that pharmaceutical comp. spend much more money for "marketing" than drug developement…

The target for the health sector should be Americans paying the European prieces and not Europeans paying the American prieces, Mr. Ramaswamy. And by the way about 25 percent of my wage go to health insurance. Why? Because retirees don't pay that insurance, so do children, stay at home parents and people out of work.
I have Medicare (for all) in Australia. If Democrats were smart they would implement it and run on it in every election. It is a doable program and has been done across nearly every western country. Universal healthcare will win every election whoever promotes it.

Wow, did Maher and this other guy butcher the facts and reality of public health care! The high cost of health care is the result of government intervention??? WTF ?! You're way off your nut, Vivek. It's rapacious capitalism and incentives to act thusly. As Marianne said, single payer removes the for-profit insurance company middlemen and sets fair prices that the government will pay for procedures and meds. No more of this across-town discrepancy in pricing Maher noted. But more fundamentally, patients won't even be billed, so this situation Maher describes can't impact them, and if they occur, it'll be the government that deals with the gouging facility. Taking this burden off of people (patients) is a HUGE benefit of this system.
