  1. From Leigh high school in the 70’s and my dad went to Campbell high 4 years prior…. He used to just keep the doobies on repeat when he came back on highway 80 from UNR TO San Jose and I grew up on them from the day I was born in 1993. I can sing every song by heart now

  2. I caught the doobies on 10/29/21 in Allentown, the final night of this leg of the 50th anniversary tour – WHAT A SHOW!! TomJohnston AND Michael McDonald and, of course, the one mainstay through all the different permutations of the doobies, Patrick Simmons…wish I could’ve seen Tiran Porter up there onstage, he’s an excellent bass player, maybe even skunk 🦨 Baxter 😂, but no complaints, they truly put in a fabulous show, 2 1/2 hours, no opener, came on stage 15 min or so after scheduled showtime…gonna go back to see them again, it was so good, in Camden, NJ in June…

The Doobies are a good example of what happens when a corporation (Warner Bros) demands a return on their investment, there was to be no stopping the band, even temporarily, when Tom Johnston had his troubles in the 70s…they were fortunate to get Michael McDonald, to continue their success, and they coalesced around him, IDK if Johnston has/had any lingering feelings about it, it did not show when they were onstage. Most bands don’t survive, let alone thrive, when their (unquestioned, afa I can tell) leader leaves the band. Second lives for groups are very rare. And the Michael McDonald years are nearly, if not actually, just as “important” as the years when Johnston was cranking out those radio-ready songs on their first few lps.

  3. When I watch this segment, I get teary eyed and am in awe at how brilliant and humble these guys are. I know they understand how seminal they have been and still are to millions of listeners ranging from those that got to see them in their early years to those who are the grandchildren of the first fans.

Sure, there are many iconic groups still out there playing but few can compare to the overwhelming musical talent and strength of personality that the “core four” possess. It’s like hanging out with your cousins on Thanksgiving Day and throwing a football in the street. One feels “at home” with the Doobie Brothers.

They radiate goodness throughout and have that folksy, Smokey Americana slant to them. It’s comfort food to me in a world fraught with division. They unify and lift the spirit to a place where few others have lead and the world is blessed to have had and still have them.

  4. Kind of get the feeling that the only reason Michael McDonald is touring with them is the fact it’s higher profile and a bigger payday for everyone involved. McDonald obviously fits in well, but at the same time still seems like the odd man out.

  5. do tom and michael like each other or just tolerate each other? i like the doobies but im not huge fan im more of a greatest hits type of fan dont know the entire back story

  6. gone are the days of Artistry, profound lyrics & a true voice in other words, Talent. Today's "music" is about silly words, trying be cool & catering to Elementary kids while using auto-tune to enhance their voice…. pathetic.

  7. Goingsee then next weekend in New Orleans with my dad the memories from my childhood are riddled with the doobies being played by him in the car stuck and28 now still can’t get enough and ecstatic to finnaly see the live!!!!

  8. They were in Az last night!! A little before my time, but, I must say, One of the Greatest bands ever to exist!! So happy they're still going strong and have they're sanity. Life on the road is tough and I highly respect these guys!! My nephew is driving one of they're buses on they're U.S.A tour 😍

  9. It's so nice to see a band endure over 50 years, and set aside, and indeed forgive any acrimony that has occurred over the years. The Doobies are one of the rare bands that have never been strictly defined by set members, but has been fluid and changing over the years, but it has always worked. The two original singers/songwriters are still there, so anyone around them still constitutes the Doobie Brothers. While I prefer Tom's sound over Michael's, I still love Michael's contributions. I only wish that John Hartman & Tiran Porter were still there, as they were on the early albums, hence the "original Doobie sound" would be a bit fuller. For them, I believe it always has been about the music, which has allowed all the waxing & waning egos to survive in a band.
