The same island that was greatly affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded in 2013, was hit with another super typhoon causing total destruction and deaths.
Super Typhoon Haiyan left Leyte Island, Philippines, with a death toll of 5,000 in 2013.
Super typhoon Rai left a trail of death and destruction in Southern Leyte this week.
Rai, also known as Super Typhoon Odette in the Philippines, is the 15th typhoon to hit the Philippines this year. Rai was a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds at landfall and with gusts over 185 miles per hour. Rai made nine landfalls in the Philippines.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said at least 31 people died and many are still missing.
The storm comes as the nation prepares for Christmas, a major holiday in the Philippines.
As of 2019, the Philippines was the third-largest Catholic country in the world.

Odette first made landfall over Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte on Thursday afternoon, causing “total devastation,” according to Surigao del Norte Governor Francisco Matugas, as shared by his son, Surigao del Norte Representative Francisco Jose Matugas II, on Saturday.
The typhoon has since traversed Mindanao and Visayas, making its ninth landfall over Palawan on Friday.
Eight provinces were left totally without electricity after Odette damaged transmission lines as it crossed the Visayas and Mindanao over the past two days, the Department of Energy said on Friday.
Bohol and Cebu declared a state of calamity due to the damage brought about by Odette.
Dinagat Islands Governor Arlene ‘Kaka’ Bag-ao meanwhile said Odette has leveled the province to the ground, reminiscent if not worse than Yolanda.
Several flights were canceled due to the damage from Odette.
Another island that was greatly affected by the super typhoon that made two landfalls is Southern Leyte, the same island that was hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. The island received less media attention and they are desperately in need of help.
According to the information we have gathered, most coastal homes have been destroyed, leaving residents without food, clothing, or shelter.

Despite the calamities, there’s no looting in the grocery store and people patiently wait in line for service.
Typhoon Odette left the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday afternoon, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
