My GSD Solomon began exhibiting symptoms of DM in 2007 (at first dragging a rear foot when walking) and we let him go in early Dec of 2010 (age 12). I was completely on my own throughout the process (I don't think a lot of the local vets really understood what it was). I was devastated, but we made the most of those years, keeping him as mobile as we could for as long as we could. The last year was mostly just keeping him comfortable and happy. I told a friend that the dog had carried me for years (he was an emotional support dog before there was a term for it), I could carry him the rest of the way. I did not mind.
But I sure wish someone had warned me about the seizures…
